11-YEAR-OLD SETS TWO LONG ISLAND HOUSES ON FIRE IN JULY 4TH MISHAP, ADULT WHO PROVIDED FIREWORKS ARRESTED

Two homes on Long Island suffered extensive damage after a 33-year-old man allegedly gave an 11-year-old fireworks and told the child to ignite them, authorities said Friday.

Karamjit Singh allegedly handed an 11-year-old fireworks outside his home in Levittown, New York, about 35 miles east of New York City, on the morning of July 4, according to a Nassau County Police incident report.

After instructing the child to ignite them, the fireworks malfunctioned and ignited a detached shed, bursting it into flames, police said.

The fire then spread to Singh's home and a neighbor's home, causing extensive damage before the Wantagh Fire Department extinguished the fires, according to the report. No injuries were reported.

Singh was arrested and charged with arson, reckless endangerment, child endangerment and various fireworks-related offenses. The 11-year-old was released to a family member.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, fireworks cause more than 31,000 reported fires every year.
